Floppies Are Dead

Sony has stopped manufacturing floppy disks! The floppy is dead, long live the flashdrive. I bought into the death of the floppy years ago with it’s supposed heir-apparent: the Zip Disk. I had an LPT-driven drive, meaning that data would flow about as slowly as a document went to your printer back before USB. It was horrendously slow to backup anything bigger than this sentence. I’m glad we’ve finally moved past floppies, but I wish it had happened about 15 years ago. Here’s the article for more info. [link]

Denny Green, former Minnesota Vikings head coach

I overheard a background conversation a few minutes ago about the Vikings in the 1990’s. It reminded me of Denny Green, my favorite coach of that era. Despite never reaching the Super Bowl, he had a hell of a record with the team.

Well, he eventually became the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, and one major blow-up at a press conference later…and now he’s the head coach and general manager of the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

If I could make the trip, I’d still love to watch him coach. I hope he makes it back up to the NFL someday, or a decent college team.

I also found out that one of the teams in the UFL is my old purgatory-haunt of Omaha, Nebraska. They haven’t named the Omaha team yet, but they have a voting form for those interested [link]. I voted for the Mustangs, since that seemed to be the least-sucky name. If I knew a couple-hundred people, I’d try to get a write-in vote for “Demons”. Because, come on, what’s more bad-ass than a Demon?

From the darkest reaches of Hell, I will outscore you on the field. Unless you can play a mean fiddle.

By the way, the voting ends TONIGHT. So hurry up!

Express Checkout, via Challenge Accepted

This morning I was adding a couple more websites to my Links/Blogroll list, and I decided to put my money where my mouth was. I more-or-less added the first few sites on the list because those bloggers have commented on my blog recently. (With the exception of Jon from Dr. Strangelove. While he does comment on here a lot, I added his blog because I’ve been paging through it off-and-on for several years.)

As I was paging through Amy’s Challenge Accepted blog, I came across this post, and I did a literal LOL. I've stopped going to a particular department store if the checker is too nosy. Heck, I stopped going to Subway for a couple years after they started making my sandwich before I even opened my mouth. I..used to go there a lot, you see...yeah, anyhow, unrelated text.[link]

New Design

This post will be completely irrelevant a couple years from now when I will undoubtedly change this blog’s design from this to something else, but who cares? Here’s what my blog just recently looked like: I used the Sunburn motif from WordPress’s standard designs, which had a mainly black background. I opted instead for a white background, and a good, wide layout for the posts. That way the blog would fill left-to-right on both standard and widescreen monitors.

And I finally updated the blogroll to include some blogs I peruse. I haven’t had a blogroll in over a year, when this blog was still named Kraznoy, so it’s nice to have one again.

So, as you visit Dakota East, enjoy the lighter look.

Life As I Know It

“It’s life Jim, but not as we know it.” -Spock from Star TrekThe Devil In The Dark

That quote has nothing to do with this post. I just liked the sound of it.

I just finished reading the 10th and final book of the original Sandman story by Neil Gaiman. Although he went on to write “The Dream Hunters” as an 11th book a few years later, the original 10 stand alone as a continual and amazing work of art. While I had only a few mind-shattering moments that I had many times during the course of reading Alan Moore’s Watchmen, the Sandman series was definitely a fun and engaging tale throughout its meandering, sometimes directionless, but extremely satisfying run.

My only regret is that I did not discover Sandman until recently. But if I had discovered him when the books were new, I doubt I would have appreciated the work for what it was. Ditto with Watchmen, which I only read when I heard the movie was being made.

Right now, I’m struggling with what to read next. I have the 11th Sandman book yet to read, but after that…where should I go? I decided, for the time being, to mainly stick to the books that I enjoy the most: those by Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman. At one point I started to collect the Masterworks editions of various Marvel comics, but I find those to be largely a waste of money. I don’t really care what Peter Parker did in the 1960’s that much. Eventually I’d like to get the books, merely to fill in some blanks (like how did Gwen Stacy die, which technically I know, but I’d still like to see the dilema). For the time being, I’m much more interested in the 1980’s and 1990’s and the lives of those characters created by Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore.

So, where to now? I suppose an easy place to start would be V For Vendetta, a story that usually ranks high on ‘best graphic novels’ lists. Maybe Coraline after that, or Swamp Thing. After that…I don’t want to go all magpie with the collecting just for the sake of collecting. I’d much rather find gems of various writers instead. Maybe Sin City, although I’m not sure how much I’d get into the story. The movie was amazing in its artistry more than it’s storytelling. If I start going in the direction of Frank Miller, then maybe I’ll hit the Dark Knight books.

Any suggestions on where to go from here, other than what I’ve already laid out?

Three hours of tweaking this blog…

…reminded me of this song. And then the song reminded me of MTV’s House of Style. And that reminded me of Club MTV, Downtown Julie Brown, regular Julie Brown, Earth Girls Are Easy, Jim Carrey, Truman Show, Ed Harris, Apollo 13, and Kevin Bacon, of course.

And it took longer to figure this out than it took to play this entire video in the background. I work too long for a weak joke, I admit.

What Am I Going To Do With You? (commentary)

Okay. I’ve been a blogger for almost 4 years. And I kind of like it. Sure, most of what I do is either grab stuff from other peoples’ sites, or I use Stumble-Upon to find fun stuff to nab. But I have a lot of fun doing it.

To some extent, this is simply a glorified Facebook profile, and all of my links are profile updates. However, since I’d lose all my friends if I put as many things on Facebook as I put on here, there is still reason for this blog’s existence.

I guess what I’m really asking myself (in the form of a public, but little-read forum such as Dakota East) is this: do I want to simply continue as I have been, or do I want to get serious about blogging?

My role-model blog is Bits and Pieces. From what I can tell, that blog started off a lot like my own, but they have grown into a much larger beast. With ad-revenue. I’m sure the revenue still ain’t enough to quit a day-job, but it’s still an income, which is kind of cool. And it’s in the form of a small, somewhat unobtrusive ad.

So, do I want to become the next B&P? Or do I want to just put my little updates here for prosperity?

I haven’t decided. For the forseeable future though, I’ll just continue on as I have been. At any rate, enjoy.

-Aaron
