In Memory: Mrs. Chippy
Mrs. Chippy is one of the hundreds of casualties on Antarctic expeditions. <strike>She</strike> He was shot by the crew of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 94 years ago today. Shackleton recorded in that day’s log:
This afternoon Sallie’s three youngest pups, Sue’s Sirius, and Mrs. Chippy, the carpenter’s cat, have to be shot. We could not undertake the maintenance of weaklings under the new conditions. Macklin, Crean, and the carpenter seemed to feel the loss of their friends rather badly.
For the full story (and to understand why it was felt necessary to shoot the cat and other animals), look here: <a href=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Chippy”>Mrs. Chippy at Wikipedia</a>.

Marathon Training
For the next 3 months, I will be training for the Run to Read Half-Marathon in Fairmont, West Virginia on January 9, 2010. Since I currently weigh 235, I figure I need to lose at least 17 pounds in order to not hurt myself. I picked 17, since I weighed 218 when I ran my last race, the Lincoln, NE Half-Marathon in May or June of 2005. Of course I’m now almost 5 years older, in my mid 30’s instead of my late 20’s, but I figure if I can nail close to the same weight again, I’ll be doing okay. The long mileage won’t be coming until mid-to-late November, so I should be able to train my legs to do their thing without injury. I’ll be stretching plenty in order to keep everything from over-extension, and I’ll also be doing a good share of push-ups and sit-ups in order to work out my upper body and tighten things up there. I’ll try to take some pictures before the race, and if I have the urge to do so, maybe a couple phone-pictures during the race. The physical compensation for racing is not a medal as you’d get at most other races, but a pair of gloves and a hat. Which should come in handy for those winter runs in my future. I don’t know about you, but my body is truly a cold weather furnace. I just LOVE to run in the winter-time. That said, I will probably be posting various laments in the future weeks such as “HOLY BALLS, IT’S FREAKING COLD OUTSIDE!!”, and so on. On the bright side, I won’t be running around a frozen lake with absolutely no shelter from the wind like my old running grounds in Nebraska. Thanks to my anal-retentive nature, I’ve plotted my course from now until January via automatic updates on my run blog, where I’ll also put little tidbits about my running as I go along. Until then, see you in West Virginia in January.

(broken movie link, sorry) Harvey Awards – GGR spoof
Oh darn. This thing is completely broken. I’m sorry if you went here expecting the Harvey Awards. I’m afraid I can’t find the original movie as I type this in April May 2010. I hope I didn’t waste too much of your time. Go outside, enjoy life, and try to forget this happened. Sorry.
