Randy VanWarmer – Just When I Needed You Most

This song is stuck in my head today. It has no context, just the result of some stray neuron in my head creating a connection where there wouldn’t normally be.

Ameristar and the Quadricorn

I used to live within 15 miles of an Ameristar Casino, so seeing this commercial fly around the internet made me a tiny bit homesick for the Omaha, Nebraska area. I got over it though.

I still feel bad that Captain Borodin in The Hunt For Red October didn’t get to see Montana. But at least he got to see a bunch of cool CGI dinos a couple years later.

20 From Aaron’s Hard Drive

In regards to the “That 70’s Show” then/now comparison, just remember: Don’t do drugs, kids. Or at least hard drugs. Although I don’t do anything other than alcohol once in a Blue Moon (pun definitely intended), I personally have nothing against an occasional hit of LSD or pot. Even if they legalized both, I doubt I would try them, but feel free if it ever comes to be.

Oh, and you’ll see that most (or all) of the pictures for the next few days came from 9GAG.com. That’s because I’m posting the first files from my massive downloads folder, and 9GAG happens to name their files a bunch of numbers that rise to the top of the list. 9GAG is awesome, and you should check it out at some point. Or don’t, since I post my very favorite pictures from 9GAG on here. It’s completely up to you. I just wanted to be honest with you, and also nod my head, saying, “Yes, I know pretty much every picture for the next few days has that 9GAG tag at the bottom.”

Carry on…

20 From Aaron’s Hard Drive

Why 20? Because I’m not getting ahead. I’ve had way too much time on my hands lately, and I’ve acquired a ton of pictures. I need to drop it to zero, like yesterday.
Note: That picture of the cat-post tree? It’s the Star Trek Starship Enterprise, and Terok Nor from Deep Space 9. Pretty awesome.
Note 2: Painting a DeLorean black makes it look like an 80’s-era Honda Accord hatchback. Not cool.
Note 3: That doo-dad attached to a wi-fi antenna? It’s a pop can. Cut off the bottom, then cut a strip along the side, and around most of the top. Run the antenna through the opening in the lid. Bam! Your signal is boosted for less than $1.
Note 4: That weird dial on the keyboard? It’s something every keyboard should have (but doesn’t). It would make life much easier.

I had a lot of stuff from 9GAG today. Unless I want to recrop every image, it’s impossible to yank their logo off the pictures. Not that I want to, mind you, since I love going there, and I’m more than willing to tell others to do the same.

Earthquake reaction…sorry, I couldn’t help myself

I know what I said in the previous post about “blah blah, earthquake, blah”, and being tired of hearing about it…but this being my first earthquake, I wanted to know how others responded to ‘their’ first EQ. My first reaction was, “Damn, someone’s working on the roof!”. And then, after 3-4 seconds, I realized it was an earthquake. And then…I didn’t do anything. I stood up, looking at the walls, most notably the most distant wall of this 30-yard long room, and watched it shake as much due to my own gyrations as the building itself. And then, after about 20 seconds, it slowed down to a minor tremor.

And after this, I continued to do nothing. I went back to work as if nothing had happened.

Was this a smart thing to do? I’ve read about people who, inexperienced in earthquakes, went SPRINTING to the outside (including co-workers of mine). I think about the mega-disasters we had almost 10 years ago, and how those who reacted the fastest were most likely to survive the situation than those who sat at their desks, waiting for instructions. But see, I’m former military. I had some of my individual flight-reflex beat out of me in basic training, and now I’m much more of an “awaiting further instructions” kind of guy. I’m like an obedient sheep, waiting to be told the next step, instead of a crazy lemming, forming a mob and eventually jumping off a cliff. (Note: I know lemmings don’t actually do this, but it makes for a good analogy for this rant.)

Eventually, the building security ordered us out of there, to my chagrin because I really wanted to get some work done, like updating my Facebook page with details about the earthquake. But it makes me wonder if I’d still be alive to post this if something major actually had happened.

And then I get all existential, because I do believe in Heaven, and the afterlife, and I wonder what it would be like if my earthly existence had come to a close yesterday. I’m not altogether happy it didn’t, because I’d really love to see what’s next. Which is kind of a messed up thing to admit, but it’s still true. I love my life, even with the trials of college and work, the thoughts of having children, and trying to avoid political discussions as much as possible. And although I’m afraid to die, I’m more excited to find out what it’s like. The quake kind of brought that feeling to the surface.

So, back to my point: Those of you who have survived an earthquake, what did you do? How did you react? What did you think and feel when it was happening, and after it was over with?

Earthquake blah blah blah

Yeah, I’m already tired of the mighty quake of 2011. I felt the ground slide back & forth like a DJ scratching a record, and 20 seconds later, the freak-out began. It was fun, and thankfully no one was hurt. In my office, I saved my soda from being tipped over…and that was the most exciting thing that happened.

Thankfully, the internet has a sense of humor about the whole thing, so here are a few aftermath posts.

1) Aftermath photos

2)

3) Musician Interruption

4) A webcam in Chantilly, Virginia records the tremor. This is about 10 miles east of where I was when it happened.

5) I thought it was a bomb!

Just a quick explanation: The wasps on the spyglass is the result of a guy hitting a wasp nest with a rock, and then running inside while bunches of wasps swarmed outside his apartment door. And the “Johnny Sims” is from “The Sims”. If you haven’t played it (and purposefully killed those you were supposed to raise and protect in the game), you won’t get it.

For that rabbit picture, insert your favorite Monty Python and the Holy Grail quote there. I refuse to quote that movie anymore, mostly because whenever I do, suddenly it gives license to some dweeb in my immediate vicinity to start quoting the rest of the movie to me as if I hadn’t seen it forty times before I turned 18. I haven’t seen it since. Nor do I want to. So keep that stuff to yourself there, bub.

Also, the caterpillar has a bunch of tiny penguins on its back. How about that?
